PARTY MIXERS

Party Mixers are activities which attempt to help groups of people who are not well acquainted to interact and get to know one another. The party mixer process will hopefully help them to learn each other's names, exchange ideas on a non-threatening topic, become more relaxed in their interactions and sometimes make it so everyone doesn't have to arrive at the same moment.

THE GREAT GONDOLA BALLOON RACE AS A PARTY MIXER
This activity requires 1/2 hour to 2 hours, depending on time available and how you plan it.

STEPS IN A COMPLETE ACTIVITY
Procure gondolas, helium, ballast, markers, tables, ribbon or string, prizes
Scissors and tape aren't necessary for the gondola but can be handy other ways.

Pass out Gondolas and instructions
Decorate Gondolas
Assemble Gondolas
Inflate Balloons

Attach Balloons
Latex balloons-pull knot through hole in Gondola handles
Mylar balloons-tie ribbon through hole in balloon tab and through hole in handles

Add ballast to make balloons hover
Practice moving the balloons

Play games
Speedy Gondola - Race straight to finish
Master Gondolier - Race around obstacles
Bull's-eye - Land on a Bull's-eye target
Team Relays - Small groups race in sequence
Windbag - Blow the balloon to finish
Pop yer noggin' - Two people blow balloon at each other
Dueling Gondolas - Two to four people compete to move one balloon

LENGTH OF TIME

Any single step can be lengthened or shortened, depending on your time objectives and advanced preparation. For example, if all the Gondolas were assembled and attached to balloons before the activity started, and the number of games was limited, the practice and play would take less than 1/2 hour.
